Installing a monument
Share
We often get asked if we install. Unfortunately, we do not and you will have to do it yourself or source a local monument provider.
Here are some useful tips to install a flat marker and upright monument.
FLAT MARKER
Installing a granite flat marker flush with the ground ensures lasting beauty and stability. Start by marking the area slightly larger than the marker’s size. Excavate the space to a depth of about four inches, ensuring a level, compacted dirt or even gravel base. Carefully set the marker flush with the surrounding ground. Check its perfectly level from all angles. Finally, backfill around the edges with soil and lightly tamp it down. Proper installation prevents shifting, allows for easy mowing, and ensures the marker remains dignified and maintenance-free for years.
UPRIGHT MONUMENT
Although we are only offering smaller sized upright monuments, they are still very heavy. Installation often requires a picker crane, specialized hand wheeler and two people. A foundation will be required and can be precast granite or concrete. Most commonly, the foundation is 8" wider and 8" deeper than the base to provide a 4" surround and they are usually 4" thick.
The base will be placed on the foundation and small amounts of putty are placed underneath the base to ensure it doesn't move. If the foundation isn't level, shims may be required to ensure the base is level. Once the base is placed, the upright will be placed on top. Apply an epoxy adhesive to the base before setting the upright down. Once positioned correctly, it is recommend to apply a silicone seal around the edges of the upright to prevent water from getting underneath the upright. You can trim the access silicon with a putty knife.
Prairie Flat Memorials does not provide installation services. You will be required to coordinate installation on your own or with a local monument company
